In the journey of recovery, measuring progress extends far beyond the binary measure of sobriety. While abstaining from substances is a significant achievement, it represents just one facet of a multi-dimensional process. At Impact Wisconsin, we understand that recovery is a personal, intricate journey that encompasses mental health, physical well-being, and social support. This is why we’ve adopted the Recovery Capital Index (RCI) from Commonly Well to guide our client care.

The Multifaceted Nature of Recovery

Recovery is not a one-size-fits-all process. It involves improving mental health, maintaining physical health, and building a robust social support network. Mental health plays a crucial role in one’s ability to manage stress and maintain healthy relationships. Physical health impacts overall well-being and the capacity to handle the physical challenges of recovery. Social support offers a sense of belonging, emotional support, and motivation. Recognizing the complexity of recovery, we’ve embraced a tool that appreciates and measures these diverse aspects: the RCI.

Why the Recovery Capital Index?

The RCI offers a holistic view of an individual’s recovery journey, taking into account the various elements that contribute to sustainable recovery. Here’s how the RCI aligns with our commitment to comprehensive client care:

  • Holistic Assessment: The RCI evaluates more than just sobriety; it assesses mental and physical health, social networks, and personal accomplishments. This aligns with our belief that recovery encompasses the whole person.
  • Personalized Care: By providing a detailed overview of an individual’s strengths and areas for growth, the RCI enables us to tailor our interventions and support to meet each client’s unique needs.
  • Progress Tracking: The RCI allows clients and caregivers to track progress across different domains of recovery capital, offering a more nuanced view of recovery than sobriety alone. This encourages a more nuanced understanding of personal growth and resilience.
  • Empowerment: By focusing on a broad range of recovery assets, the RCI empowers individuals to recognize and celebrate their progress in areas beyond substance use. This holistic approach fosters a sense of accomplishment and motivates continued effort in recovery.

Implementing the RCI in Our Programs

At Impact Wisconsin, we’re committed to supporting individuals in their recovery journey with compassion and evidence-based practices. The Dwelling Initiative and other programs leverage the RCI to monitor and support our clients’ progress comprehensively. Whether it’s through building strong social networks, developing coping skills, or practicing mindfulness, we use the RCI as a guide to ensure that every aspect of recovery is addressed.

Our use of the RCI is a testament to our belief in the power of resilience and the importance of a holistic approach to recovery. We’ve witnessed firsthand how this tool has enabled us to serve our community better, aiding over 150 individuals in the recovery community in Waupaca and surrounding areas.
